2022 Subterra Los Olivos District Pinot Noir
A truly versatile light red wine from one of the earliest-planted, great pinot noir areas of the US: Santa Barbara County, California. I was also surprised to find this wine is related to another element of California’s heritage, the Sebastiani family—which in the past has been known more for its longevity than quality. Looks like that’s changing, with fourth-generation August Sebastiani now running Subterra.
This wine is made in a modern Burgundy style. It has a medium-light body, hints of cherry and a trace of tobacco-earthiness. And it’s lower in alcohol than many reds, at 13.8%.
In this pinot noir, there’s just enough tannin and acidity to pair with a wide variety of first and main courses. If you’d like to try it, you’ll have to pick some up soon because only 3200 cases were produced.
